Tackling the Problem of Plastic Waste

Yang Hoi Kiu, Immy (3A)

Plastic pollution is becoming a serious problem in Hong Kong. The city produces about 3.4 million tons of waste each year, with over 32% made of plastic. Plastic waste not only fills up landfills but also poses a significant threat to wildlife. In this essay, I will discuss the impact of excessive plastic waste and suggest what students and government can do to address the issue.

Plastic pollution affects both the environment and public health. When animals are hungry, they often mistake plastics for food, leading them to injuries or even death. As a result, some species may face extinction if they do not have enough food. As a result, the risk of infectious diseases amongst the animals may increase. Overall, plastic pollution not only harms wildlife but also disrupts the food chain and the balance of the ecosystem.

To solve this problem, we should adopt some remedial measures. First, students can help by promoting awareness. They can organize events such as “No Plastics Wednesdays”. For example, reducing single-use plastics is also a simple way students can help. Clean-up days can also encourage students to further reduce plastic use. For instance, students can participate in beach clean-ups to conserve the marine environment. Hence, students can inspire their communities to take action against plastic waste.

From the government’s perspective, setting stricter rules on single-use plastics is essential. Measures such as banning the use of plastic bags, straws and cutlery can make a significant difference. Besides, shops should not be allowed to distribute free plastic bags. The government should also raise awareness on TV channels. News about plastic waste should be highlighted to raise people’s awareness. Improving recycling facilities and supporting eco-friendly initiatives are also effective ways to tackle the problem.

To summarize, we can make our city clean and healthier by working together. It is imperative to take immediate action so that the precious ecosystem can be protected.

Letter of Proposal

Luo Tin Chuen, Tim (3B)

Dear Principal Lam,

I am writing to propose holding a cooking competition. It will be called ‘Cook for the Hungry.’ I plan to raise money for Action Against Hunger, a charity which lends a helping hand to people without food.

To ensure that the competition will run smoothly and effectively, we would like to make the following suggestions.

1. Details of the competition
We suggest having the competition on the 8 November from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the school’s Home Economics room. Students need to donate $50 to sign up for the competition. To attract students to participate in this competition, we would invite a famous 5-star restaurant owner, Ram Lee, as our special guest.

The competition requires participants to form teams to apply for the cooking competition. Each team is limited to four people. At last, three teams will be chosen to be the winners of this competition. We have invited Miss Wong, our Home Economics teacher, to be the judge. The judging criteria include taste, appearance, smell and creativity. All of the winners will be invited to Ram Lee’s restaurant to have a free dinner.

2. Benefits of the competition
Participants can improve their communication skills and learn to collaborate with others from this competition since they need to discuss the dishes they will make and complete different tasks with each other. In addition, the competition can also develop students’ creativity and encourage them to think out of the box as one of the judging criteria is creativity.

To conclude, I am confident that this competition would benefit not only the needy in the world but also the students, since they can learn how to think of something new.

I hope that you will consider adopting this proposal.

Yours sincerely,
Chris Wong

Robots Make our Lives Better

Tang Tsz Sing (3C)

What do you think about robots? Do they have positive or negative effects on our lives? Nowadays, robots are stronger and more capable than ever. They can help with our homework, make our lives more convenient and be our companions. I believe that robots can greatly improve our quality of life and make our lives much easier.

First of all, robots can assist with our homework. After lessons, robots can help us understand subjects like English, Maths and Chinese. For example, in English, robots can provide grammar corrections with explanations which improves students’ grammar skills. Also, robots can improve the quality of our homework. They can conduct research and find information for us, making homework more manageable. Therefore, robots can assist with our homework, which makes our lives better.

Secondly, robots can make our lives more convenient. Robots can learn quickly and perform a wide range of tasks. For example, robots can wash dishes, buy groceries, and even repair devices. This allows us to have more free time for other activities, for example playing video games, sleeping or studying. Therefore, robots can make our lives more easier and allow us more free time.

Finally, robots can be our companions, which makes our lives better. When we feel lonely, we can talk to them as if they were friends. They can be with us anytime, anywhere. They can chat with us, play with us, and even read books with us. Therefore, robots can make our lives better.

As we have seen, robots not only can help with our homework but also can make our lives more convenient and can even serve as friends. If we use them wisely, we can utilize their positive effects to improve our quality of life.

Why Streaming Platforms are Good

Mok Tik Sum, Dickson (3D)

Since streaming platforms are growing in popularity, more people are choosing streaming platforms instead of watching movies at the cinemas. What is your preference? I choose to watch the streaming platforms and here are the reasons.

First, streaming at home is undoubtedly cheaper than watching movies in the cinema. You just have to subscribe, then you can watch as many movies from the platforms as you like. Most of the streaming platforms provide their own original movies or series shows that you cannot find in the cinema. Also, subscribing to streaming platforms is cheaper than watching a single movie at the cinema. The snacks and drinks from the cinemas are extra costs to the expenditure too. In contrast, buying snacks in regular shops are more economical so enjoying movies with snacks will be much more affordable than going to the cinema.

Next, I feel that streaming is more convenient. Watching movies is no longer limited to the cinema. People do not need to go out and line up outside the cinemas for just a movie. Movie lovers can watch the films anytime and anywhere. Watching movies with streaming platforms not only allows people to watch at home, but also let them have more privacy and personal space. For example, if the weather is cold, people can snuggle in their homes and enjoy their movies without worrying about the weather outside. People can have more privacy and will not be bothered by toddlers’ crying or disturbances from other people.

Finally, streaming is easily accessible. Thanks to the prevalence of smart phones, all we need are our headphones that connect to the smart phones. Streaming is undoubtedly better than watching at the cinema. There is nothing as easy and convenient as watching films from streaming. To illustrate my point, most streaming platforms allow you to download movies for offline watching. If you’re on a plane, this function would be very useful because movies can be watched without the Internet connection. Watching movies at the cinema requires views to arrive at the cinemas at a certain time but streaming allows viewers to watch movies whenever and wherever they want.

To conclude, streaming is absolutely better than going to the cinema. It is convenient, economical, and time-efficient. Streaming is our future.
