A Memorable Experience

Last month, I travelled to China to visit my grandparents for Chinese New Year. I was so excited because I knew I was going to receive red packets from them.
Chinese New Year is a festival that celebrates the beginning of the new year. Families get together for a reunion dinner and young children receive red packets from their relatives as good luck in the coming year. On the day of the festival, my family took me to a crowded street to watch the lion dances. The performers did all sorts of impressive tricks during the show, and it was really mesmerising. In addition to the dances, there was also a band playing traditional Chinese music. The streets were filled with the sounds of drums and cymbals, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
The most unforgettable experience was watching the nightly fireworks display in my grandparents’ backyard. The fireworks were so colourful and bright that they lit up the entire sky. Suddenly I heard loud bangs and to my surprise I saw the faces of my whole family projected into the sky! I was shocked and immediately asked my dad what had happened. He smiled and said, “I spent $500 on it. It was expensive, but it was worth it.” I was so touched that tears filled my eyes. At that moment, it felt like a dream.
Apart from watching the fireworks and the lion dances, I also enjoyed a reunion dinner with my family. There was so much delicious food, including fish, chicken, rice and many other dishes. After the main meal, we ate traditional festival food such as turnip cakes, rice cakes and spring rolls. Everything was so delicious that I felt completely full afterwards. To top it all off, my grandparents also gave me red packets, for which I was very grateful. I was not only grateful for the money, but also for the wonderful Chinese New Year experience they had given me.
It was such a memorable and heart-warming experience. I hope I can celebrate this festival again next year!

Animal Adoption

Last Sunday, I celebrated my tenth birthday. I threw a party with my friends. They bought a birthday cake which was a chocolate cake. It was really my cup of tea as I am a chocolate lover! Before eating the cake, I made a wish. I said to myself, ‘I want to have a dog as my pet. That’ll be a perfect birthday gift to me!’
The next day, my wish came true. My brother gave me a surprise. He took me to an animal shelter to adopt a puppy. ‘Instead of buying a puppy, why not adopt one? There are many dogs that have been abandoned, becoming stray dogs,’ my brother said. ‘That’s a great idea!’ I replied excitedly. In the animal shelter, I chose a dog whose fur was brown and ears were long. It looked adorable. I decided to call it Choco as its fur was brown, looking like a piece of chocolate. ‘Chris, you’re so creative!’ my brother exclaimed in delight. After adopting Choco, we bought it’s necessities, including dogs’ shampoo, dog food, a bowl, dog toys and a brush. I felt excited.
When we went back home, my brother taught me, ‘Don’t forget to walk the dog twice a day to keep it active.’ ‘No problem! I will do so!’ I answered immediately. On the next day, I fed Choco with pet food it needed. I also took it hiking with me in the morning. In the afternoon, I tried to train it. I gave it some treats when it could obey commands. We enjoyed our time. At night, I gave it a shower.
Unfortunately, two days later, Choco got sick. I took it to the vet. ‘Don’t worry too much. Choco was just too tired,’ the vet said gently. I thanked the vet and took Choco home. I remembered to give it its medicine on time. Though it was not easy to look after a dog, I felt very happy to have it in my life. Choco was not only a pet, but also my new companion.
The 30th Annual Athletics Meet

The 30th Annual Athletics Meet took place at Tseung Kwak O Sports ground on the 3rd and 4th of October. More than 400 students participated in the track and field events. There were thrilling races and competitions, and the students enjoyed the Athletics Meet very much.
Student helpers arrived at the sports ground early to decorate the stadium. Different colorful banners and flags represented each house, creating an exciting and amazing atmosphere.
The competition started after the opening ceremony. As the announcer announced the races, athletes were doing some warm-up exercises while some proceeded to the starting line to prepare for the running race. When the 100m race started, the athletes ran at the speed of light. I heard spectators clapping and cheering loudly for their own houses in support of them. Some of my classmates tried their best and some even broke the running record.
The highlight of the day was the performance from the cheering teams. Principal Lam mentioned that all four houses danced very well, and she couldn’t decide on the champion of the cheering competition. She also said, “It’s wonderful to see each house dance enthusiastically. I was amazed to find that all the S.1 students co-operated so well.” At the end of the closing ceremony, she happily announced that the red house had won the competition. The stadium roared with cheers as the red house leader received the trophy with a big smile.
After the closing ceremony, it was touching to hear the leader mention that it was their first time winning the cheering team competition. He also encouraged us to take part in activities to support the house. We all look forward to the Athletics Meet next year.
